The case of Oksana Makar had called for unseen before reaction in the Ukraine, and internationally. The actual crime is horrible: three young Mykolaiv residents had drugged, and repeatedly raped the 18-year old girl, strangled her, and burned her alive to cover their tracks. The victim survived, had lost both feet and hand from the fire, and is struggling for her life in the Mykolaiv hospital at the moment of preparation of this report. She never lost her consciousness; our prayers are with her.
The case is awkward and disturbing, but there is, unfortunately, more. One of the criminals is a son of the ex-State Prosecutor of the Central District of Mykolayv, and of the former Head of the District Administration, both are the activists of the Party of Regions. Mykolayiv police found all three in a matter of hours, but two of them (guess, which ones) were released for the term until the court hearing, with no bail requested. [Remember, how requests for release of Tymoshenko or Lutsenko were turned down?] The boys were re-arrested only after the story hit the front pages, and when people started calling for Lynching them. Police did not question the victim for four days, and waited with taking samples also for four days, until these samples would become irrelevant. Local Law Enforcement started moving only after the Minister of Interior had intervened. They obviously believed that they will be able to trash the case, and to save glamour boys from jail.
What they miscalculated was the degree of anger to which people came. Not as much as Tunisia Ben Ali in December of 2010, but it is yet to come… On March 15 Mykolayiv people had announced the protest against non-action of the Law Enforcement. It was the protest, which was self-organized through social media. While opposition in Kiev forced the Ministry of Interior to act, the local protest was totally grass-root. And here it comes: the Party of Regions had organized a counter-demonstration, with no meaningful agenda, simply to block the protesters. They defend their right to rape and kill the regular Ukrainian folks.
All this is very troubling in many ways: the crime is horrible, but horrible crimes happen in different countries, there are mentally disturbed people in any society. But the police acted as an accomplice, and was only worried about the proper cover-up for the criminals. And the very troubling aspect is, in my opinion, the counter-meeting. None of its participants, not to mention its organizers, was held back by normal human feelings. It is a decay of the morale, and don’t tell us, that it was isolated case. There were 100s of them, and it was organized by the ruling party. Similar things happened in Germany under the NSDAP rule, and the same happened under Bolsheviks only 90 years ago.
It is a mistake to think, that the beast is dead. Not the beast of the communism – this one seems to be really dead for now. The beast of shameless, conscienceless, aggressive and immoral mediocrity, which was the base of German Fascism, and of the Russian Bolshevizm. This one is back in Ukraine in a full swing. The social base for the new inhuman regime is here, and keeps showing itself time after time. The fact that Yanukovych is no Hitler, and no Stalin, is somewhat comforting, but not much. No one among Bolshevik leaders took that narrow-minded Koba (party nickname of Stalin) seriously, neither Trotski, nor Kamenev, nor Zinoviev, nor Bukharin or Rykov. All of them were shot, while small-minded Koba became the bloodiest dictator in the humankind history.
